Self Aviary is a production company based out of Los Angeles, CA. Their principal is a director named Mazik Saevitz – a very creatively talented individual and 10+ year veteran of the music industry.
I met Mazik in the spring of 2008 through a mutual friend at his birthday party, and after a couple drinks we got to talking about various creative projects that we were involved in. He mentioned to me that he was really looking to launch a new, Flash-based site that mimicked the look and feel of his existing site. I had recently begun to expand my knowledge of Flash and told him that I’d be happy to take the project on at a reduced rate, if he’d be willing to allow me a bit more time to experiment.
The biggest challenge in developing this site was quite obviously the book. I used an existing code library that was open-source AS2 and learned a lot about coding through this library. It was fairly complicated to say the least, and I have an innate need to understand exactly how things work. It took me a good week to fully boil-down the script and how it operated, and I was able to modify it to the point where I could add in textures that Mazik approved (he’s big on the moleskin books).
